Leah Jane Stevens was born in Garnett, Kansas, the 4th of 5 children to Drs Robert and Mildred Julius Stevens. Leah was a good student and idolized her 3 brothers. Dr Robert and Dr Julius had a busy family practice in Garnett for over 60 years. Leah graduated from Garnett High School as Valedictorian and gave the Commencement address. Four of the 5 Stevens children became medical doctors while the youngest has a law degree and a master’s in business.
Leah went to the University of Kansas in Lawrence and was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. Leah was admitted to Phi Beta Kappa for scholarship at KU and graduated with Highest Distinction.
Leah went to medical school at the University of Kansas School of Medicine and was admitted into the Alpha Omega Alpha scholarship society. She served as President of Alpha Omega Alpha during her senior year of medical school.
After graduation from medical school, Dr Stevens did an Internship in General Surgery at the University of Kansas Medical Center. She then switched into Family Medicine at the University of Kansas Medical Center and served as Chief Resident. She was the first recipient of the Resident Staff Teaching Award in the Department of Family Medicine.
Dr Stevens moved to Leavenworth in 1982 and opened her first family medicine practice in 1984. She is Board Certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and has been recertified six times through 2019. Additionally, she is a Fellow in the American Academy of Family Practice.
Dr Stevens remarried Colonel Kato Waage of the Norwegian Army in 2001. She has 4 sons; Will McCollum, John McCollum, Jim McCollum and Carl Stevens Waage.
Leah Stevens Waage, MD, FAAFP has returned to Leavenworth with new inspiration and training. She was first trained in cosmetic medical procedures and lasers in 2008 and has been primarily doing Botox and filler in addition to a family medicine practice.
In 2017, Dr Waage put her dream of starting the first medical laser facility in Leavenworth into action. She has been trained and certified as an Alma Laser Center of Excellence and will be opening her medical and cosmetic laser practice, LazerDoc, in March 2018.
